Amritsar, July 28
The state government today said it would provide a five-kanal plot near the old patwarkhana on the Fatehgarh Churian bypass in Ajnala for conducting the symbolic last rites of the martyrs of the 1857 mutiny. The announcement comes a day after the Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Committee, which manages the historic Kallianwala Khu at Ajnala, threatened to approach the Prime Minister’s office for not being given suitable land for the purpose.
In a press statement issued here this evening, Amarjit Singh Sarkaria, president of the committee, and Surinder Kochhar, a historian, said this was informed by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ravi Bhagat during a meeting held in Amritsar in which Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) Amarpal Bony was also present.
They said the DC had informed that the government would hand over the land before the cremation scheduled for August 1. A suitable memorial would be constructed at the spot. The CPS reportedly said he would meet Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to discuss the construction of the memorial.
Kochhar said as per the programme, priests of all religions would pray for the peace of the departed souls and candles would be lighted to pay homage to the martyrs. On August 24, a rally headed by the CPS would be organised at Ajnala to pay respects to the martyrs, whose remains would be immersed in the Ganga at Haridwar.
