BERHAMPUR: As many as 221 people from the state sacrificed their lives in the freedom struggle between 1857 and 1947, retired history professor of Berhampur University Subash Chandra Padhy, said.

Padhy has collected the names and addresses of freedom fighters to prepare the Dictionary of Martyrs in Indian’s Freedom Struggle (1857-1947) of Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR).

The ICHR appointed him as the project coordinator for Odisha to prepare the dictionary. "The book will be a quick reference of freedom fighters. It will help research scholars and also the next generation to know more about Indian’s freedom movement," he said.

"I have submitted the project to ICHR. It is likely to be published by the year end," he said. The ICHR divided the country into four zones for preparing such dictionaries. Odisha is coming under the east zone. While the ICHR has already completed such dictionary for the North Indian states, such a book for the other zones is in progress, he said.

Padhy has already compiled a book of the short biographical sketches of freedom fighters of Ganjam district. He has named at least 240 persons from Ganjam districts, who were directly and indirectly involved in the freedom struggle.

They included the imprisoned persons due to their involvement in the national movement and also not imprisoned, the persons lost their lives while fighting in Burma. The book was helped a lot for preparation of the project" he stated.
