GUWAHATI, April 27 – The 207th birth anniversary of India’s great martyr of the 1857 Sepoy revolution, Maniram Dewan was observed here today under the auspices of the Swahid Maniram Dewan Trust.
The function held under the presidentship of veteran journalist DN Chakravartty was addressed by several leading citizens.
Paying tributes to the memory of the martyr, Arun Chandra Baruah, working president of the trust, and a great grandson of Maniran Dewan, dwelt at length on his pioneering contributions towards the discovery and commercial propagation of tea in India even prior to the adventures embarked upon by the earlier band of the British tea growers in India.
Baruah also mentioned the role played by Maniram Dewan for regaining the independence of Assam a couple of years ahead of the Sepoy revolution.
Paran Barbaruah, Biswadip Baruah, Nischhyuti Majumdar, Bhupen Das, Satyabrata Baruah and Indrajit Dutta, while paying tributes to the martyr, suggested that the Government of India should be approached by the Chief Minister of Assam for release of a postage stamp in the memory of Maniram Dewan — either on his birthday on April 27 or on the day of his martyrdom on February 28.
The meeting discussed the ways and means for setting up of training centres for small tea growers of the State and urged the State Government to take appropriate steps for proper perpetuation of the memory of the great freedom fighter and visionary.
A new executive committee with DN Chakravartty as president, Arun Baruah as working president, and Rajashree Baruah as general secretary was formed.
