KANPUR: After Holi, the residents of the Industrial City will once again smear their near and dear ones in different colours on the occasion of Ganga Mela, a festival of colours celebrated only in Kanpur in the country.
This year, the Ganga Mela will be observed on Thursday. The festival is held in Anuradha Nakshtra, three to seven days after the full moon. It is celebrated seven days after the Holi in the memories of revolutionaries who were released by the British government after being held made captive during the 1857 revolution.
On this day, people first smear each other with colours and then head towards the banks of Ganga for a dip.
It is because of this unique trend that the festival got its name – Ganga Mela.
The residents of old localities of the city like Hatia, Nayaganj, Birhana Road to name a few have made all preparations for this unique festival.
Locals mostly use gulal to smear each other during this festival.
In view of Ganga Mela, the district administration has made elaborate security arrangements in the city.
